Among the tons of reasons we love coming to work everyday, one that sits high on the list is knowing we work for someone who cares so much about our community. Cenac Owner, Arlen “Benny” Cenac, recently donated $10,000.00 to a local community garden. The garden is located at Southdown Plantation House and is being operated in conjunction with the St. Francis Vegetable Garden in Thibodaux. The opening of the garden was celebrated on April 7th with a ribbon cutting and reception.
Cenac, a long time philanthropist, has a history of donating to causes he believes will benefit the Houma area. He takes pride in his local community and has a personal mission to see the Houma/Thibodaux area flourish. Giving back to the community that has been a part of his business for generations is his way of ensuring that continues to happen. When asked about being involved in such a project, Cenac responded, “This is important to our area. Not only is it a great addition to both the St. Francis Vegetable Garden and Southdown Plantation, but also, to the entire community. It benefits everyone. It creates a learning experience for all volunteers involved. The best part is, the Good Samaritan Food Bank benefits from it. It’s just a win-win for everyone, and I’m truly honored to be a part of it. I can only hope other communities see the good being done here and implement similar projects”
A Good Samaritan Board Member in attendance expressed his gratitude and said such a donation will help both the children and the community . He is looking forward to seeing the benefits of both for years to come. Mr. Cenac’s donation will help to fund an outdoor classroom, which will be utilized to teach children about growing produce and the benefits of giving back. Southdown Plantation and St. Francis Vegetable Garden will be coordinating the community effort, along with local farmers, and a team of volunteers. Volunteers are to include local students, community residents and master gardeners. The initial garden will include 12 raised beds with hopes for more in the future. Like the St. Francis Vegetable Garden, all produce grown will be donated to the local food bank in order to pay it forward to those in need.
