Roux for a Reason is a new charity recently created by members of the Houma community who came together for an important cause that hits close to home for some board members. In it’s inaugural year of competition, Roux for a Reason proved to be a huge success with proceeds benefiting Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s Early Bird Screening Bus.
“What started out as a friendly competition between friends quickly morphed into something a little bigger when family and friends inquired about being part of the event as well,” said an event organizer, Michael Meche. The charity was set up for all proceeds to be donated to the Mary Bird Perkins screening and early detection mobile unit. This cause is especially important for three board members of the new charity. Each lost a loved one to cancer battles, thus the choice to support Mary Bird Perkins and their early detection efforts was a natural choice.
Cenac Marine Services and Mr. Benny Cenac were happy to be a part of such a momentous event. We asked Mr. Cenac what made him decide to participate in the new initiative. He simply said, “We are continuously looking for ways to be a part of and help the community. It’s important for us to continue to support causes that will benefit the health of our residents.”
The event proved to be bigger than expected, therefore, bringing in north of 30,000 dollars. There were 37 cooking teams and over 650 guests for the day. The money raised will help Mary Bird Perkins complete approximately 120 screenings and keep the buss operable for 3 months.
Cenac Marine services placed first in the gumbo event. Team members included Cenac Team Members, Jeramy Carroll, Brandon LeBlanc and Brandon’s daughter, Sophia. Brandon was Cenac’s award winning chef. Houma Digestive Health placed second and Senator Norby Chabert came in third.
The event was so successful that event organizers are already looking forward to making next year’s bigger and better. Mr. Cenac is also looking forward to remaining a part of the event for years to come.
